Calera 2011 Ryan Vineyard Pinot

Calera 2011 Ryan Vineyards Pinot Noir

Josh Jensen became a pioneer in search of the perfect spot on the globe to grow grapes. Taking his cue from the great domaines of Burgundy which have grown grapes in limestone soil for centuries, he set out in search of the perfect spot in California to create wines unique to the world but in the style of the greatest wines of France. Site selection was vital as he ventured off the grid to plant on the site of an old limekiln in the Gavilan Mountains of California. Today Calera Wines still express that pioneer spirit and are revered the world over. Located 90 miles south of San Francisco and about 25 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, it is near Mt. Harlan in San Benito County. Its elevation is 2,200 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest and coolest vineyard properties in California.

Mt. Harlan is its own “American Viticultural Area (AVA),” which is a designated wine grape-growing region distinguishable by geographic features. The Calera 2011 Ryan Vineyards Pinot Noir was named after Jim Ryan, Calera’s vineyard manager since 1979, a surprise to Jim until he saw the first vintage in the bottle, 2002.

Opening a bottle, I see a nice vivid ruby red color, with slightly darker edges and immediately notice a bouquet of red fruit aromas, cherries, strawberries and raspberries, layered with some spice and floral notes. On the palate the taste transforms into ripe fruit flavors of cherries and berries covered by a slightly earthy and mineral taste. The tannins get their structure from the unique soil and make this wine stand out from the rest. Grab a bottle for your table at around $40 and you will truly enjoy this masterpiece.

Cheers!
