Crognolo 2011 Tenuta Sette Ponti
In the land of Sangiovese and Chianti rises Tenuta Sette Ponti, not far from the historic town of Arezzo, nestled in a picturesque rural landscape, crossed by the river Oreno, the estate received its name from Antonio F. Moretti, who wanted to pay homage to the so-called Road Sette Ponti (Seven Bridges), which connects the banks of the River Arno between Florence and Arezzo. “You can’t live only of wine”: this could be the motto of Antonio Moretti, who knows how, in the history and Italian culture, there is more than a fruit to harvest. Not surprisingly, the timeless beauty of the landscape has found worthy celebration in the paintings of many artists: even the great Leonardo da Vinci is said to have used this memorable glimpses of the scenery in the background of “La Madonna dei Fusi” first and then “The Gioconda”.
The first label produced in Tenuta Sette Ponti’s is an elegant wine, Crognolo, which takes its name from a wild bush, the Cornus, which grows in abundance on the estate. It is a fruity wine, emphasized by the rich scent of Sangiovese. Opening a bottle, aged in French oak, I am immediately drawn to the deep ruby red color that glistens in the glass. The bouquet is full of red fruit, cherries and blackberries, slightly spicy, almost floral. The palate brings forth the fruit that is powerful yet well balanced with smooth tannins, a touch of oak and a lingering finish. This is an extraordinarily great value for around $30.
Cheers!
