Breca 2011

Breca 2011 Garnacha Old Vines

I am going to comment on another fine selection from the Jorge Ordoñez Group.  They produce some of the most admired and prized wines internationally.  My previous comments were on LaCana, see my January 22, Post.  The Bodegas Jorge Ordoñez was founded in 2004 by the Ordoñez family from Malaga and the Kracher family from Austria, together with a group of friends and entrepreneurs from Malaga.  Perhaps the most novel aspect of this winemaking venture was to enlist the services of world-renowned Austrian winemaker, Alois Kracher, who was the undisputed number one in Austrian sweet wines.  He was succeeded by his son Gerhard Kracher in 2008.

Breca is made from 100% Garnacha, “Old Vines”.  The grapes come from vineyards planted between 1925 and 1945, located on top of a hill about 3000 feet above sea level.  The soil is comprised of decayed slate clay.  After fermentation, the wine sits on oak for around 14 months.  Pouring a glass you notice a very deep maroon color with a powerhouse perfumed bouquet of fresh ripe fruit and sweet spice.  The taste is amazing, black raspberries, dried fruit sweet herbs and subtle earthiness.  Jorge Ordoñez has come up with a real winner, especially at a $15 price point.  You will be sorry if you miss this one!

Cheers!
